There is nothing more fall than a candy apple. Visiting a county fair or harvest festival to get that sweet, crunchy and sticky treat. Jolly Rancher Candy Apple gives you the tart taste of a jolly rancher wrapped around a crunchy apple. It will bring you back to your childhood and embrace the cool weather.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
It’s easier than you think! This half recipe/half craft is EASY and only takes about 15 minutes to make.
You can make any color your want! Red candy apples are probably the most popular, but the resulting color can depend on the color of the apple. For red, pink or green jolly ranchers, use a green apple. For purple or blue, a red apple will really make the color pop. I also have a tutorial on how to make black candy apples.
Safety First!
Oven mitts are a necessity for this recipe. Melted candy is like lava and will cause major burns if it touches your skin. Please be careful. This recipe is great for kids to eat, but an adult MUST handle the hot candy.
Jolly Rancher Candy Apples Ingredients
This candy apple recipe only has 2 ingredients!
- Jolly Ranchers: I used blue, purple and red
- Apples: Granny Smith apples and red apples like Fuji or Gala
Special Tools Needed
- microwave safe glass measuring cup
- parchment paper
- wooden dowels or thick candy sticks
- edible glitter spray (optional but looks so neat)
How to Make Jolly Rancher Candy Apples
- Wash and dry the apples very well. A lot of apples have a waxy feel on the skin, you’ll want to rinse that off. Twist off any stems and push the dowel or stick through the top of the apple. It takes a bit of muscle but once you hit the core, it is easy to push through.
- Unwrap all of one color of candy and place in a microwave safe glass measuring cup or bowl. One apple takes approximately 20 candies to cover it so keep that in mind when unwrapping the jolly ranchers. Microwave on high for 1-2 minutes or until all the candy is melted and boiling. Do not stir.
- Using the stick as a handle, carefully dip the apple into the melted candy. Work quickly as the candy hardens quickly. Twist and turn the apple as that will help pop any air bubbles that may stick to the side of the apple. Allow the excess candy to drip off and place the coated apple onto a piece of parchment paper to harden.
- Repeat step 2 and 3 with your other Jolly Rancher flavors.
- Once the candy apples have hardened, use some edible glitter to make them look sparkly. Enjoy immediately.
Storage Instructions
Store leftovers individually wrapped in a plastic bag (don’t use plastic wrap, it is too thin). Keep them in the fridge for up to 2 days. After that, the candy starts to melt a bit.
This recipe does not freeze well so I wouldn’t try it. You’ll have a bit mess on your hands after thawing.
Recipe Tips
- You can use a bowl instead of the measuring cup but I found it a lot easier to remove any excess candy using the spout, and the handle is helpful when handling the hot candy.
- Leave some space between each apple. If the candy touches before it is hardened, the apples will stick together and you cannot get them apart.
- Grab some sprinkles to decorate these apples for any season. Simply shake or place sprinkles either before or after they harden.
