For this recipe, you will need noodles. I like to use rotini, but you can use the traditional macaroni.

Instant Pot Mac and Cheese Ingredients

To make this pressure cooker mac and cheese recipe, you will need the following ingredients (see the recipe card below for exact amounts):

  • pasta
  • chicken broth
  • salted butter
  • salt and pepper
  • garlic
  • whole milk
  • Parmesan cheese
  • sharp cheddar cheese
  • mild cheddar cheese

You will also need an Instant Pot for this recipe.

The Instant Pot Duo is simple and easy to use. This 7-in-1 appliance can pressure cook, slow cooker, steam, sauté & more.

How to Make Macaroni and Cheese in an Instant Pot

It is really easy to make mac and cheese in an Instant Pot. You will add everything except the dairy to the pot and cook. No draining needed! Once done, stir in the milk and cheeses until melted.

  1. First, combine the pasta, broth, butter, salt, pepper and garlic in the Instant Pot and twist on the locking lid. Select the Manual setting. Set the Instant Pot for ½ of the time listed on the package of pasta.
  2. When the pot has finished the pressurized cook time and beeps, allow everything to Natural Pressure Release for 2 minutes.
  3. Then cover the steam valve with a clean, damp cloth. This will help release the steam without dangerous and messy liquids spraying everywhere.
  4. Give the pasta a solid stir and then add in the milk and cheeses. Stir everything together until smooth and creamy. Serve right away.

Can I Substitute any Ingredients in this Recipe?

  • Instead of chicken broth, you can use vegetable broth.
  • Instead of butter, you can use avocado oil or olive oil.
  • Instead of whole milk, you can use heavy cream for a thicker sauce.

@H, per the instructions above, it depends on your pasta. "Set the Instant Pot for ½ of the time listed on the package of pasta."

[…] For one pot pasta recipes, I suggest using a very large pot. I love using my Lodge 7.5 Quart Dutch Oven (affiliate link). There is plenty of room for all the ingredients to cook, and you can stir easily without spilling over the sides. If you like one pot pasta dishes, try my Instant Pot Gluten Free Mac and Cheese. […]
