This homemade chili is the best Spicy Chili Recipe. It includes classic spices like chili powder, oregano, and basil. The secret ingredient in the best chili is green chile.
What I love about chili is that you can turn the heat up or down depending on the level of spice that you want. Don’t like spice? Just omit the jalapeno and add less or none chili spice. Want more spice? Try adding cayenne pepper to the recipe.
If you love this recipe, you can use it to make chili cheese dogs.
Chili Ingredients
To make the best beef chili recipe, you will need the following (go to the recipe below for detailed amounts and instructions):
- Ground beef: or 93% lean ground turkey
- Beans: kidney beans and black beans
- Canned tomatoes
- Tomato sauce
- Green bell pepper
- Jalapeño: keep the seeds in to make it spicier
- Green chile
- Yellow onion
- Spices: minced garlic, chili powder, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper and garlic salt
How to Make Chili
Making beef chili is really easy because you only have to use one pot!
- Brown the meat. Brown the beef or turkey in a large pot or dutch oven with onion, garlic and green pepper on medium heat.
- Add rest of ingredients. Add tomatoes and sauce. Drain and rinse the kidney and black beans and add to the pot. Add green chiles and jalapeño.
- Add the spices. Add all of the seasonings into the pot and stir really well.
- Cook the chili. Simmer for 15 minutes on medium heat, then on low for 30 minutes. The longer it simmers the tastier it becomes.
FAQs
Green chile is a spicy pepper that is grown in New Mexico and the level of spice is dependent on many variables, such as how much moisture the ground has. But you can buy mild canned green chile at the store. It adds so much flavor.
Chili in a crock pot is really easy to make. I recommend the Crock-Pot 8-Quart Manual Slow Cooker. The options are super simple and it gets the job done. You can also cook all day in slow cooker on low. First brown and drain the meat, then add all ingredients together and cook for 8 hours on low.
Serving Suggestions
To help with the spiciness, you can top the chili with green onions, cheddar cheese and sour cream.
If you want healthier toppings, use non-fat Greek yogurt instead of sour cream.
Storage Instructions
Fridge: Properly stored chili should last 4-7 days in the fridge. You want to get it into smaller containers and into the fridge so it cools quickly.
Freezer: You can also freeze chili for up to 6 months.
