How to Make a Frozen Mint Julep

This recipe is as easy as blend and serve! I like to prepare the simple syrup ahead of time and store it until I am ready to prepare my cocktails, as it needs time to cool down.

  1. In a small pot over medium heat combine the sugar, water and fresh mint leaves. Cook until the sugar is dissolved, around 5 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat and strain into a jar. Let it cool down completely.
  3. Add the mint syrup, bourbon and ice to the glass of a blender. Process until smooth.
  4. Pour into glasses and garnish with mint sprigs. You can use julep cups or any glasses you have on hand.

FAQs

What is the Best Bourbon to Use in a Mint Julep?

The best bourbon really comes down to personal preference. My favorites are Maker’s Mark and Knob Creek. Woodford Reserve is the official bourbon of Churchill Downs, where the Kentucky Derby takes place.

How Long Does Simple Syrup Last in the Fridge?

You can refrigerate the syrup for up to a week so you can double or triple the batch to have enough on hand for a second round of cocktails.

Serving Suggestions

Mason Jar – These small mason jars are perfect for serving drinks or storing simple syrup. I like to use masking tape and a marker to write the name of the syrup so I don’t forget.

Julep Cups – The classic julep cup is so elegant, but you can use any short glasses you have in your cupboard. A stemless wine glass would work perfectly.
