Irish Soda Bread is a quick bread that is made without yeast, so it is super simple to make. It is great for soaking up gravy or eating with a pad of butter.
Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt and stir.
Add in softened butter, buttermilk, and beaten egg and stir (you can use a wooden spoon or your hands. I have found that this is a little bit easier when I use my hands).
Knead bread until all the ingredients are combined (no more than 10 kneads).
Place on a heavy baking sheet or pizza stone. Shape into a ball and flatten until about 2 inches thick. You do not want it any more than 2 inches thick or the middle will not cook all the way through.
Cut an x across the top with a sharp knife. Brush melted butter on top of bread and sprinkle sugar on top.
Bake in oven for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.
It should sound hollow when you turn over and knocked on the bottom. Feel free to brush bread with more butter and sugar during the baking process for a sweeter bread. Best when served warm with butter and jam. Enjoy!
