Frankenstein Oreos

Why You Will Love This Recipe

They make great gifts! Wrap these little monsters in a clear bag and tie with a ribbon for a perfect Halloween party favor.

Kids will love them! No scary monsters here. The cartoonish look of this Halloween dessert is what I call “spooky cute.”

Frankenstein Oreos Ingredients

To make these Frankenstein treats, you will need the following ingredients (go to the recipe below for exact quantities and instructions):

  • Oreos: Use any flavor you like! You can use mint which is green, Halloween orange and there are other fun flavors like toffee, chocolate, and java chip. I do not recommend using the thin Oreos, you want to make sure you have enough room for the candy stick. Double Stuf is the easiest to work with.
  • Light green candy melts
  • Black candy melts
  • Square marshmallows: These may be called jet-puffed smores marshmallows.
  • Green mini marshmallows (These are not sold individually, but found in the fruity mix marshmallows)
  • Candy eyeballs: You can find candy eyes in the baking section of your grocery store, or at craft and party stores.

Special Tools Needed

For this half recipe/half craft, you will need a few specialty items to make sure your Halloween treats come out perfectly cute and spooky!

How to Make Frankenstein Oreos

Each Frankenstein will use 1 Oreo, 1 square marshmallow, 4 green marshmallows, 2 candy eyeballs and a candy stick.

  1. Cut the square marshmallow with scissors to about the same size as the Oreo. Put your cake pop stick into the bottom in preparation to dip in the green chocolate.
  2. Next, add about 1 cup of green candy melts in a microwavable cup or container. Place the melts in the microwave on defrost for 1 minute. Then, heat the melts in 30-second increments, stirring in between, until the candy is melted.
  3. Dip the square marshmallow in the green melts, allowing any excess chocolate to drip off, and place it on parchment paper. Add 2 eyeballs and let the chocolate harden.
  4. Remove the stick from the marshmallow head or you can use a new one. Separate the top and bottom of an Oreo. Place a candy stick vertically in the center of the open-faced Oreo and press down to create a groove. Leave room for the marshmallow head to be put back on later.
  5. Place some of the melted chocolate in the groove and around the stick. You can spin the stick in place to get the chocolate on all sides. This is going to help “glue” the stick to the Oreo.
  1. Replace the top half of the body Oreo and let the chocolate in the middle harden around the stick. This usually takes 2-3 minutes depending on the temperature of your kitchen.
  2. Now, using the same method as above, melt about 1 cup of the black melts and dip the body into the chocolate. You can dip the whole thing at once or dip the front and then the back and place it on parchment.
  3. Put the green head onto the stick above the body.
  4. Next, dip the green marshmallows halfway into the chocolate and place them on the body. Make sure you put enough chocolate on to look like sleeves and pants. You may need to hold the leg marshmallows in place until they hold firm (about 10-20 seconds).
  1. Using a plastic bag or piping bag, fill the bottom corner with some of the melted black chocolate. You may need to reheat the chocolate at this point for another 30 seconds before putting it in the bag. Once in the bag, it tends to harden more quickly than in the container.
  2. [If using a plastic baggie, twist the top end of the bag like a piping bag. Cut the tip of the bag at the corner (the cut is very small).]
  3. Pipe on the hair, a smile and a scar. For the hair, start with lines on the forehead and then fill in from there. For the smile and the scar, you can practice on the parchment beforehand.
  4. Let the chocolate set. You may place them in the refrigerator to set more quickly.

Recipe Tips

  • Use the edge of the cup or bowl to wipe excess chocolate off the back and then place it on the parchment paper.
  • When cutting your piping bag, remember you can always cut off more and in the event you cut too much just switch to a new bag. Test a line on the parchment to make sure the thickness is to your liking.

FAQs

Are candy melts chocolate?

Candy melts are a confectionary ingredient made with sugar and oil that are flavored and colored and usually used for baking and decorating. While they are referred to as chocolate they are technically not chocolate. Similar to the way white chocolate is also not technically chocolate. Candy melts are used as a candy coating for all kinds of treats like these Oreos, cake pops, large pretzels and sometimes in candy molds.

Where can I buy candy melts?

Candy melts can be found year-round at craft stores like Michaels and Hobby Lobby, or party stores like Party City. Buying candy melts on Amazon is not recommended, as there is a chance they will melt during shipping.
