Cookie Mix in a Jar is a great homemade gift idea perfect for the holidays. Add a personal touch to your best chocolate chip cookies recipe.
Cookies are the perfect gift for neighbors, friends, and family alike. This chocolate chip cookie recipe is our family favorite: crisp on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. All your recipient has to do is add the butter, egg, and vanilla extract. The recipe makes 24 cookies.
Super easy to customize and decorate (kids love making these to give to their teachers). The recipe and all the steps are included, including a FREE PDF printable of the instructions for the recipient that can be printed out and attached to each jar.

What You Need to Make Cookie Mix in a Jar
This is a 2 part project. First you need the cookie ingredients (minus the wet ingredients) and then you need to decorate the mason jar.
Mason Jar Cookies Ingredients
To make cookies in a jar, you will need the following ingredients (scroll down to the recipe card below for exact amounts and directions):
- All-Purpose Flour
- Baking Soda
- Brown Sugar
- Granulated Sugar
- Chocolate Chips
Supplies Needed To Make Cookie Mix in a Jar
Mason Jar – I find that wide mouth mason jars work best, it’s a lot easier to get the ingredients inside the wider opening. Make sure you buy the 32 oz (1 quart) jars.
Fabric – This is the fun part because it is totally up to you! You can use plaid, snowflakes, evergreen – whatever your heart desires! They will need to be cut into 7×7 squares.
Ribbon or Twine – Again, you get to choose what kind of ribbon or twine to get. Will you go for a rustic look, or get fancy with shiny gold curling ribbon? You could even use yarn. Personally, I like this red and white Christmas twine.
Cardstock – This is for printing the recipe. I like to use cardstock because it is sturdier.
Hole Punch – This is to punch a hole in the cardstock so you can attach the recipe to the mason jar lid.
Piece of Paper – I find using a piece of printer paper rolled into a loose funnel really helps with getting the ingredients inside the mason jar (and not all over the counter). This is optional but makes things less messy.
Scissors – You can use strait scissors or pinking shears to add a little design.
How to Make Homemade Cookies Gift Jar
- Layer the ingredients, in the order listed, within the mason jar.
- Place the metal lid on top, followed by the piece of fabric. Screw on the ring over the fabric, to hold it in place.
- Print out these recipe instructions on cardstock and cut out each “tag”. Use a hole punch to punch a hole in the recipe card.
- Using ribbon or twine, attach the recipe card to the mason jar, tying either around the neck of the jar or around the ring.
- Gift to your friends and family!
How Do I Store the Mason Jar Cookies?
You can store these at room temperature, sealed in the mason jar for weeks. Just be careful they don’t get too warm or the chocolate chips will melt. If your house is on the warmer side, store them in a cool, dry place, until ready to gift.
Do I Have to use Cardstock for the Recipe Tag?
No, you can use whatever paper you like. I recommend using cardstock as it is more stiff than regular printer paper, so it’s a little more durable. You can even handwrite each recipe card to give it a little personal touch.
